CCW Expo 2015 | Innovative Content Strategies for News: Balancing Data, Technology, Social & More

Thu. November 12| 1:45 PM – 4:45 PM | 1A10

This workshop will feature three fascinating sessions that will address the changing content landscape for news organizations. Technology, data, social media, video and user-generated content will all play a bigger role going forward. Progressive media companies will need to adapt and put resources towards these areas. The payoff will be substantial for those willing to think more like a disruptor.

The Newsroom of Tomorrow: Balancing Better, Faster and Cheaper

TV newsrooms are constantly innovating in an effort to deliver the news faster and more cost-effectively. But the introduction of new forms of technology and content sources present inherent challenges. To what extent can automation genuinely enhance the editorial process – which is definitionally grounded in human judgment? What role should 3rd party tools and outsourced solutions play within a newsroom’s proprietary technology stack and workflows? How can user-generated content be quickly and reliably authenticated? And how will newsrooms navigate the legal minefield of using imagery and text generated by civilian witnesses? In short, how can editors, news executives, and media organizations balance the need for better, faster and cheaper? Panelists – including broadcasters, and reps from tech and social media companies – will share their industries’ and organizations’ perspectives as well as their own experiences.

How Broadcasters are Using Mobile and Connected Platforms to Reach Consumers – Case Study: NewsON with Panelists Representing Several of the Partner Companies.

Disruption and collaboration are alive and well in the broadcast industry. ABC Owned Television Station Group, Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Media General, and Raycom Media have joined together to form NewsON, a groundbreaking new service for local news, nationwide. Using the NewsON app for iOS, Android or Roku devices, consumers can now watch live and on-demand newscasts from their local markets or from any of the 110+ participating news stations, representing 85+ markets in the country (and the numbers are growing). An overview of this new digital venture will be provided in this session. Partners will then talk about the importance of industry collaboration, early results from the project and plans for the future. The group will also share how other TV stations can join the partnership and take part in the advertising revenue share.

Louis Gump, CEO, NewsON

Data and Analytics: Invest or Be Left Behind

“Analytics should be empowering; not punishing,” according to Sachin Kamdar, CEO and Co-Founder of Parse.ly. Sophisticated newsrooms must now measure everything imaginable. More importantly, they should use that information to drive strategy and grow audience. In this session several broadcasters that have made a significant investment in the collection and analysis of data will share their strategies and success stories. Kamdar will also provide overall trends from the hundreds of media clients that use their analytics platform.
