DaVinci Resolve Colorist Marilen Magasaysay Wins ‘Best in Color Grading’

Blackmagic Design announced that Marilen Magasaysay, DaVinci Resolve colorist with Manila based post production company Optima Digital, has won the Asia Pacific’s first ever regional “Best in Color Grading” award for her work in “Stylist”, a clean air campaign video, at the Asia Image Apollo Awards 2013.

Designed to include major areas of creative and technical mastery in production and post, the Asia Image Apollo Awards pays tribute to technical and creative excellence across Asia Pacific.

“Stylist” is a two minute public service ad by Manila based creative agency BBDO Guerrero for Clean Air Asia. The goal of the ad is to raise people’s awareness of air pollution and it depicts how an eccentric stylist, who calls herself the “architect of beauty” and “craftsman of tomorrow,” experiments in a warehouse turned lab to create the art of nose hair for people whose nose hair grows exaggeratedly as the result of heavy air pollution.

Directed by Lyle Sacris, the ad was shot with multiple cameras in a single day. Given different shooting formats, Marilen had to make sure the related shots matched together when the look was established for each vignette.

Based upon her 20 years of experience, Marilen set the basis for the look in DaVinci Resolve and then worked with the director and cinematographer Ber Cruz to finalize the major creative ideas and objectives for the look of the project.

Achieving this objective required Marilen to come up with a different “color treatment” for each of the six vignettes, plus several incidental shots, to make sure all these color treatments worked harmoniously and looked unified in order to create a “filmic” look.

“With the 4GPU Linux DaVinci Resolve, I was able to use with ease as many nodes as I needed to combine Custom Curves, Power Windows, Sharp/Blur VFX, Primary and Secondary grading for the look I wanted to achieve,” Marilen remarked.

“I like the stylized look. Grade was consistent throughout the whole spot. Contrasty and edgy but not too overpowering,” colorist and Apollo Awards judge Emilio Batungbacal commented.

As the first recipient of the “Best in Color Grading” award, Marilen said: “Winning Apollo Award’s first ever color grading award is truly a great honor for Optima Digital. This recognition means a lot to us because Optima Digital has always placed premium attention to giving the best quality of color grading service to its clients in both creative and technical aspects.”
