IBC Audiences are Stunned at the Big Screen

One of IBC’s best attractions is the IBC Big Screen Experience, a full programme of editorially led sessions and ground-breaking product demonstrations. The RAI Auditorium is equipped with the state of the art digital cinema technology especially for IBC and this year the technology is even more impressive than ever – and delivering great content.

The IBC Technical Team has installed a number of Christie projectors into the Auditorium for the Experience. These include a high brightness projector for digital Pro-AV content.

But the star of the show this year is the new high brightness Christie’s 6-Primary (6P) laser colour system. This is being used for 3D screenings, using the Dolby format. The laser projector delivers an extraordinary 14 foot lambert (fL) on the screen, making 3D movies look more bright, crisp and stunning than ever before.

This allowed IBC to rack up another first. On Saturday night IBC screened Ang Lee’s Life of Pi – the first time any audience anywhere had seen a full-length feature film using the Christie laser technology. The visual feast is set to be repeated tonight with IBC’s second screening, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

As well as Christie, Dolby Labs and QSC also partner the IBC team to build the facilities, which also include Dolby Atmos surround sound this year, matching the stunning pictures with all-embracing audio.

“The IBC Big Screen Experience Programme is the must-attend free event that explores and showcases the very latest innovations within the cinema industry that disrupt the status quo of the science and business behind the very art that is experienced by the cinemagoer. “ explains IBC’s Big Screen Experience Executive Producer, Julian Pinn. “We are indebted to Christie for their support year after year. Their supply of the Christie 6p laser projection system has enriched the experience beyond all expectations. Not only have we been able to showcase two full-length feature films at full-brightness on a super high quality matte white screen; a world first together with Dolby Atmos; and provide a full afternoon dedicated to laser projection and what that offers from a colour-science and experience perspective, but we have been able to host visionary film-maker and pioneer Douglas Trumbull to be our Keynote speaker and showcase his UFOTOG short film at 120 fps, full-brightness 3D–which promises to be a real glimpse into a very exciting cinematic future.”
